Gopher FitStep Uploadable Pedometers
If you are required to give an "effort or participation" grade on your school's report card and you've always struggled with the subjectivity of that grade, the Gopher FitStep Pro or FitStep Stream pedometers may just be the objective measure you've been looking for...
Responsive & InteractiveUnlike traditional pedometers that only count steps, the Gopher FITStep Pro and FITStep Stream pedometers measure total activity time, MVPA time and step counts on 3 different screens students can scroll through. They are an extremely accurate 3-D pedometer/accelerometer that counts all movement forward, backward, up, down, left and right.
How they work...I use a class set of pedometers for all my PE classes. Each student is given a "kid code" number and has the corresponding numbered pedometer assigned to them in the free FITStep software. Typically I have students enter the gym and go directly to the pedometer rack to get their pedometer. Once they have it on they may start the warm up activity for the day. I own the FITStep Stream Bluetooth pedometers, so, students wear the pedometers throughout class and during the last 2 minutes, I stop the class and have them press the blue button on the outside of their pedometer. This automatically uploads all their personal activity information to the computer software program via Bluetooth. After they upload, they reset it, put them away in the corresponding number pockets on the wall, and line up.

My Grading Rubric...We are on a 3 point grading system. I see my students for a 30 minute period. Based on my teaching style, size of my gym space, and transitional times during class, I've developed an easy way to assess students' active participation based on the number of MVPA minutes they accrue during class.
