Each week you can see the activities that our students were engaged in as well as many of the resources I used in my teaching. I put out these weekly posts for parents to see what their child is learning in PE as well as for other PE teachers to get ideas they can implement in their own program,
This week our students worked on some basketball skills that focused on shooting. The kids got lots of individual practice and enjoyed participating in a few shooting games. Since we only had a 4-day week, not every class experienced all of these activities as some classes only had PE once this week.
Just an FYI for parents...Class Dojo wasn't allowing video uploads to our individual class stories from my iPhone, so there weren't any posts on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Day 1 Lessons:
Our intermediate students (grades 3-5) got started right away with some shooting practice in small groups. I use an app called Classroom Teammates as my random group generator. I mirror my iPad to the TV (via Apple TV) so students can see a larger display. Then, I simply tap on the desired number of groups and it places students into 6 different color groups. Students look to see what color group they are and then quickly move to their designated hoop and begin shooting.
After we warmed up with some shooting practice, it is time to move into game play. I shuffle the teams again so students get a chance to play with different people for the first game. We played a game called, "3 Wins, Wins!" The object is to be the first team to make 5 baskets at all three hoops. Depending on how long the games lasted, we played 2-3 rounds, selecting new groups after each round.
Our primary students (grades K-2) began day 1 with a Star Wars themed video that focused on basketball skills and fitness exercises called, "Avoid Darth Vader." Each student had a ball and had 15 seconds to dribble to a colored cone/corner area of the gym. The video would reveal which corner Darth Vader picked after the 15 second countdown. If he chose the same color that students chose, those students would have to do a fitness exercise. If they could "Avoid Darth Vader" then students practiced a basketball skill.
Next, K-2 got to practice some shooting into buckets. Many students can't shoot a ball up into an 8' basketball hoop yet and using the buckets was a nice way to make a shooting activity easier (and more safe). I let them shoot into any bucket they wanted from any distance. They counted up the total number of shots they made if they wanted to. Then we experimented with different forces and trajectories and tried to bounce our ball one time and make it land in a bucket.
We ended our class with a "Dribble Line Up" game where students looked for the first letter of their first name. When it appeared on the screen, they dribbled their ball to the rack and put it away, gathered their personal belongings, and lined up. Click HERE for video I used by Kevin Tiller.
Day 2 Lessons:
Our K-2 students warmed up with some "Poly Spot Dribbling" or bouncing and catching their ball off of different colored spots. I would spin the color wheel and whatever color it landed on was the color they tried to dribble or bounce their ball off of. This helped students keep their eyes up and look around while traveling with their ball. Below is the app I used along with a screenshot of the spinner I made.
We ended our class with a "Dribble Line Up" game where students based on the type of pet they have at home. There was even on for "no pets". When it appeared on the screen, they dribbled their ball to the rack and put it away, gathered their personal belongings, and lined up. Click HERE for video I used by Kevin Tiller.
Grades 3-5 got to play two shooting games on Day 2 - "Kings & Queens of the Court" and "Hoop to Hoop." I don't have a video of the Hoop to Hoop activity in action as I was busy scoring the rounds.
