As a physical education teacher who sees students 2x/week for 30 minutes, I need to maximize every instructional minute in order for students get the most out of each lesson. So about 6 years ago, I started using a projector and a screen in my gym to share information with students visually and it was a game changer! I could play videos of skill practice, fitness activities, or dances and have the students follow along. It was like having another teacher in the gym with me as it freed me up to interact more with the students and diagnose and direct as needed.
After experiencing success and connection with the students using the videos, I began creating visual lesson content in PowerPoint to use during instructional and assessment times. Instead of me explaining how to select a proper size jump rope, for example, I had a slide with a picture of a student demonstrating it. So when students got a rope and asked me if it was the right size, I could just respond, "Does it look like the picture?" This way, they determined if it was correct for them. The visual displays helped me shorten my talk time and get students back to moving as quickly as possible.
Over the next several years I began making visual content for my teaching on my iPad with an app called Comic Life. I created everything from activity sheets and printable resources to station signs and wall posters. As a veteran teacher, I had lots of great ideas and projects I wanted to bring to life. I built a website and shared my work with the PhysEd community there and also posted daily on Twitter. As I got better at creating content, I needed something more robust than Comic Life and came across Canva. It had a richer experience and seemed to make my creation time go faster. I liked its intuitive design as well as many of the features it had that Comic Life did not. So I made the switch and continued creating. I really liked the more professional "look" that Canva gave to my content.
Fast forward to the start of this school year (2021), I received an email from a member of a company called Visme stating they saw a tweet of mine regarding different graphic design platforms and asked me if I'd be willing to give their platform a try. I agreed and received an upgraded "Business Plan" membership in exchange for using their product and sharing my findings with my online audience. After taking a look at all Visme had to offer, I was blown away! Their product was clean, powerful, and had tons of premium features built right in.
Visme is literally a one-stop-shop for ALL your design needs! You can create eye-popping graphs & charts, stunning flyers and other printables, and you can even create scatter plots and publish survey results with just a few clicks. I love the social media graphics, infographics, and web graphics you can make as well.
The user experience is smooth and instinctive. There are 100s of ready-made templates to choose from no matter what content type you are looking to create. Needless to say, I got busy creating right away and even took their free online course, "Creating Memorable Visual Presentations" to help take my game to the next level.
