So great to have the students back in the gym! This week we picked up where we left off by finishing up our long-handled striking unit using floor hockey sticks. All grades participated in a variety of activities utilizing equipment suited for their developmental level.
Our older students participated in 2 days of small sided floor hockey games. They used skills previously taught to play for 5 minute rounds with a random group of players. Every 5 minutes we start a new game with a new team. Below is a video of what that looks like in our classes. The students have really adapted well to the random group maker tool on the Class Dojo app too! Leveraging the technology has really helped maximize activity time and cut down on transitional times during class.
Our younger students worked on stick handling and puck control on day one with an activity called Floor Hockey Frenzy. Students worked on moving a yard ball across the gym with their hockey stick by keeping it close and under control. They had to navigate their way across the gym being careful to not knock over any bowling pins that were spread out on the floor as obstacles. When they made it across, they got to take a silicone bracelet/wristband out of bucket and put it on their wrist. They then turned around and headed back across the gym to the side they started on. Each time they made it across, they got to take a wristband/bracelet. If they accidentally knocked a pin down with their ball, stick or body, they had to give a bracelet/wristband to me. Our final lesson included some small sided game play with groups of 3-4 to a team. We also did a quick cognitive assessment with the kids to check for their level of understanding by using our @plickers magnets to give their responses to the questions by rotating their magnet to the desired answer and sticking to the magnetic whiteboard. I scan the responses with my phone and BOOM...assessment done! CLICK HERE for link to the floor hockey assessment questions.
Our Kinders also got to experiment with manipulating a foam hockey stick and yarn ball across the gym. They played the Floor Hockey Frenzy activity (just like grades 1 & 2) and did a terrific job. Students got to count up all the wristbands/bracelets they collected and sort out all the different colors too. On Friday, we started class by getting all of the students' shoe sizes in preparation for our roller skating unit coming up at the end of January. Then we played an activity called 6 Goal Hockey. I included a video of each class playing Floor Hockey Frenzy on Class Dojo. Be sure to check it out! Not connected on Class Dojo? Contact me: email@example.com
