Students get to choose what they'd like to do and how long they'd like to do it. So if they have one favorite activity, they can choose to do that the entire time. If they have several things they want to do, they manange their time and rotate to another station whenever they want. This self-paced/self-guided learning is a great way to engage students who may have otherwise "checked out" with only a few days of school left.
Our only rules are to BE SAFE (use equipment & space properly), RESPECT OTHERS (share equipment/take turns/include others) and HAVE FUN! I enjoy seeing all the creative things students do with the available equipment and how they interact with each other. While this isn't a typically "teaching" day, students are still busy learning through active play on their own and with their peers.
Our main focus is pretty heavy on the National SHAPE Standards 4 & 5. These last 2 weeks are really a culmination of things we've learned and a chance for students to take their skills a bit further. By exhibiting responsible personal & social behavior that is respectful, it allows ALL students to have fun and be safe. I also want students to recognize the "value" of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression or social interaction. Positive experiences here will help set them up for a more active lifestyle as they grow up.
