On January 9th, our 5th grade students will be particpating in an awesome field trip at the Chicago Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle. They will be participating in four action packed stations that promote activity and a healthy lifestyle. We'll be posting some pictures of our students in action soon!
Hopefully those “lime green” papers with all the Columbus Race details on one side and the log sheet on the other side made it home this week. Your child will be working together with their classmates to earn as many miles as they can for their team by staying active and reading outside of the school day. All activity and reading is recorded on the log sheet, and when it’s full, students return it to school and take another one. Students fill as many sheets as they can over the course of the 5-week race.
Our race concludes on Columbus Day (when Columbus reaches the New World) and all the sheets will be tallied up to determine who traveled the most miles based on how much they read and how active they were! Winners will be announced and trophies given to the top class in each grade level. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Parents, to those of you that were able to attend our Back to School night last week you should have received a sheet with directions and a personalized code to create an account and link to your child’s Class Dojo behavior report in P.E. If you were unable to attend, the sheets were sent home with your child this past Tuesday.
Class Dojo is the platform I use to communicate with parents about all the great things your child is demonstrating in P.E. and also a way to let you know of any areas that may need improvement so you can support your child’s learning at home too!
Once you create your account (if you’re new to Class Dojo) and/or enter your personalized code (for returning members) I’ll be able to see you’ve been connected to your child’s class and you’ll receive a weekly email (typically on Friday afternoons) reminding you to log in to your Class Dojo account to view your child’s behavior report in P.E. You can also communicate to me directly through a two-way “text message” feature if you’d like. A new feature this year called Class Story, give me the ability to share pictures and video clips of things your child is learning in class. Having a “window into the gym” will hopefully give you some talking points to spark conversation at home with your student.
If you have any questions about the program or your child’s paper got lost in the shuffle on its way home, please feel free to contact me and we’ll get you all set up!
Our annual "Plunge Into Fitness" Challenge sponsored by Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville wrapped up with 112 students completing the 25 hour activity challenge and earning a free ticket to Raging Waves this summer! Tickets were distributed to teachers' mailboxes on Friday (4/29) so hopefully you'll see your student's coming home in their backpack soon! Congratulations on a job well done and a BIG thank you to the staff at Raging Waves waterpark for their support in helping maintain physically active lifestyles in our kids.
As some of you may have heard, I will not be returning to teach P.E. in the fall at Fabyan and Heartland. I have accepted the full-time position at Williamsburg Elementary - filling a vacancy due to a retirement. I have traveled between two school buildings for the last fourteen years that I've been in the District. The move to Williamsburg will allow me to teach at one building without having to travel anymore.
While I'm excited to finally call one school, "home", I will miss working with the students, parents and staff that I've become a part of over the years. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories! I trust my work with your students has helped them develop competence and confidence in their physical skills and in turn increased their motivation - ultimately leading them toward increased participation in a healthy, ACTIVE lifestyle!
Yours in health,
The Plunge Into Fitness program gives children in grades K-8 the chance to earn a free weekday ticket to Raging Waves Water Park. From February 16th to April 11th, students participate in at least 30 minutes of physical exercise each day. Upon completion, a parent or guardian “signs off” on their fitness log. After completing the program, each child will have completed over 25 hours of physical activity. The student then brings in their completed fitness log to school in exchange for a voucher good for one free weekday ticket to Illinois’ Largest Waterpark.
